Terence Shiels

Year conviction was overturned:
2009

Terrence Shiels was convicted of membership of a proscribed organisation and possession of a firearm. He admitted membership of the IRA and admitted possession of a handgun. He was held without access to a lawyer or a parent which went against rules stating that all young people in custody should be allowed to consult a solicitor and have an adult present during interview. Because of this breach and the fact that the admission was the only evidence, the conviction was ruled to be unsafe.
