Daniel Mansell

Years in prison:
11
Year of crime:
1996
Year conviction was overturned:
2009

Daniel Mansell and Paul Maxwell were convicted of robbery and murder. The prosecution’s evidence relied heavily on the evidence of a prolific informer who implicated the men. On appeal, it was revealed that it had not been disclosed that the informant had been receiving huge financial and goods-based rewards for giving evidence. This misconduct was deemed to be an abuse of the system and the convictions were quashed since the jury may well have viewed the evidence of the informant differently had they had this information.. A retrial was ordered for Maxwell (who pled guilty) but not Mansell (since there was no new or compelling evidence against Mansell).
