Bob Maynard

Years in prison:
23
Year of crime:
1974
Year conviction was overturned:
2002

Reg Dudley and Bob Maynard were convicted of the murder of two London gangland figures – Billy Moseley and Micky Cornwall. According to the police, the two made incriminating remarks before formal interview. A prisoner also provided evidence that Dudley and Maynard had confessed to him. On appeal, evidence was introduced from the prisoner who had implicated the defendants, saying that he had fabricated his evidence in collusion with the police (although the court noted that this by itself would have been unlikely to cause them to question the convictions). In addition, it was shown that interview notes were not checked for accuracy with the defendants and that one of the key interviews could not have been recorded in the time and manner claimed. It was found to be likely the jury would doubt the reliability of police evidence if given this information, and the convictions were quashed.
