Patrick Irvine

Years in prison:
11
Year of crime:
1980
Year conviction was overturned:
2002

Patrick Irvine was convicted of robbery and manslaughter, after a team of six men were involved in a robbery from a Securicor guard, in which the guard was shot and died. Irvine reportedly made admission-like statements in the police car. The basis for the appeal was the discrediting of officers of the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad. Since the only real evidence linking Irvine to the case were his alleged confessionary statements in the police car, when evidence from the police regarding these statements was discredited the case evidence was undermined and the court concluded that there was no basis for upholding the conviction.
